The new COVID-19 strain “Cicada” is attacking the world: why it has become more dangerous specifically for children.

Epidemiologists explained the characteristics of mutations of the new COVID-19 strain

A new variant of the coronavirus has been recorded worldwide – BA.3.2, known as “Cicada.” It has already been detected in dozens of countries, but there is currently no evidence that it is more dangerous than previous strains.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing BBC Ukraine.

Main points

  • Spread: The new strain BA.3.2 has been recorded in 23 countries, with the WHO assessing the health risk as low.
  • At-risk group: Data indicates increased vulnerability among children due to the characteristics of their immune systems.
  • Severity of illness: “Cicada” does not cause more severe consequences than previous variants of “Omicron.”
  • Vaccination: Vaccinations remain an effective method of preventing complications.
  • Forecast: Epidemiologists believe the emergence of new strains is a natural process in the evolution of the virus.

Where the new strain was found

Cases of infection with the strain “Cicada” have been recorded in at least 23 countries, including the USA, the UK, Hong Kong, and Mozambique.

In the USA, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this variant has already been detected in 25 states. It has been found in both clinical samples from patients and in wastewater – one of the key tools for epidemiological monitoring.

The WHO has classified “Cicada” as “under observation,” which indicates the need for enhanced monitoring.

What makes the “Cicada” strain special

The BA.3.2 variant received its unofficial name due to its behavior – in some regions, it has for a long time not shown active spread, as if “pausing.”

Experts also note that this strain is “highly divergent,” meaning it has a significant number of mutations and differs substantially from previous variants of COVID-19.

Are children really getting infected more often

Preliminary data suggest that children may be more vulnerable to this variant than adults. However, scientists urge caution in drawing definitive conclusions, as these results have not yet undergone thorough validation.

Among the possible reasons:

  • less “trained” immune systems in children;
  • characteristics of the virus mutations that help it evade immune protection.

Research is still ongoing.

What symptoms it causes

So far, there is no data indicating that “Cicada” causes a more severe course of illness or has specific symptoms. COVID-19, regardless of the strain, typically manifests as:

  • fever;
  • cough;
  • sore throat;
  • fatigue;
  • headache;
  • shortness of breath or other typical symptoms.

Due to the significant number of mutations, the effectiveness of vaccines may be somewhat lower, but they still provide a certain level of protection.

Experts note that even in cases of infection, the illness is likely to be milder.

Is there a reason to panic

According to estimates from the World Health Organization, the risk to people’s health worldwide remains low for now. Specialists emphasize that the emergence of new strains is a natural process in the evolution of the virus, and COVID-19 has already become one of the common respiratory infections.

At the same time, special attention should be paid to at-risk groups:

  • people over 65;
  • patients with chronic diseases;
  • people with weakened immune systems.

The new strain “Cicada” does not currently pose an increased threat, but scientists continue to study it. Experts advise not to ignore symptoms and to consult a doctor if necessary, especially for those in at-risk groups.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported on a possible way to prevent long COVID. The drug metformin, typically used to treat type 2 diabetes, may reduce the risk of developing prolonged symptoms after coronavirus, but it should only be used on a doctor’s recommendation.
