The “Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez” plant is the fourth largest in Russia and processes 16 million tons of oil per year.

The oil refinery “Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez,” the fourth largest in the Russian Federation, suspended operations following an attack by Ukrainian drones on April 5.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Reuters.

Sources from the publication noted that the plant halted operations after strikes from Ukrainian drones. The facility, owned by Lukoil and the second largest gasoline producer in Russia, sustained significant damage to its infrastructure.

After the Sunday drone attack, Lukoil ceased offering gasoline, diesel fuel, and fuel oil produced by “Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez” for sale.

The governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, confirmed after the Ukrainian attack that two facilities on the plant’s territory were hit. In addition to production capacities, the power station and several nearby buildings were damaged. Supplies of petroleum products from the enterprise may be suspended at least until the end of April.

The “Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez” plant is the fourth largest in Russia. The refinery is capable of processing 16 million tons of oil per year (about 320,000 barrels per day). Moreover, the facility is located 450 km east of Moscow, making it a key supplier for the central region of Russia.

Constant strikes on the refinery are forcing Russia to reduce exports and seek ways to cover the fuel deficit in the domestic market, which directly affects the logistics of occupying forces in Ukraine, the publication concludes.

Recall that on the night of April 5, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck several important targets of the Russian army and infrastructure. Among the hit targets was the “Lukoil-Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez” refinery, where a large fire broke out after the attack.

It should be noted that in addition to this refinery, the Russian oil terminal “Sheskharis” in Novorossiysk also suspended operations indefinitely after the strikes from Ukraine. On the night of April 5, drones attacked Novorossiysk, and videos of the fire at the “Sheskharis” terminal and reports of explosions surfaced online.

Additionally, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that Ukrainian defenders struck the oil terminal in the port of Ust-Luga on the night of April 7, which is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Ukraine has been attacking it for the second consecutive week. In fact, the port is out of service and is currently unable to load oil onto tankers.
