Why is the Kremlin talking about the defeat of Orbán’s party?

The Kremlin is considering the possibility of defeat for the party of the current Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, in the parliamentary elections. Russia is preparing the ground to blame the Hungarian team for a potential failure.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Russian media.

Kremlin assessments ahead of the elections

According to the Meduza publication, Russian authorities believe that the “Fidesz” party will lose the elections scheduled for April 12.

Sources close to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s administration note that earlier in Moscow, there were hopes for Orbán’s victory thanks to the efforts of political technologists, but now the Kremlin is feeling skeptical.

“Initially, there were hopes that Orbán and his technologists could turn the situation around and win the elections on party lists. Now the Kremlin assumes that this will not happen,” the publication quotes its source.

According to media reports, in the event of a loss, Kremlin-controlled media will present this as a “color revolution” organized by the European Union.

At the same time, Orbán himself will be blamed personally by Putin.

“Even with our support, they achieved nothing,” are already the talking points emerging from the Kremlin.

Russian interference in the electoral process

Earlier, Western media, including the Financial Times and The Washington Post, reported on attempts by Russia to assist “Fidesz”.

The plan involved promoting Orbán’s image as a “strong leader” and launching information attacks against his main opponent, Péter Madlár, and his party “Tisa”.

The Kremlin denies any official management of the campaign, but confirms “assistance” on social media.

The position of the USA and ratings

In support of Viktor Orbán, U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have publicly spoken out.

Despite this, recent polls indicate that “Fidesz” is trailing behind the “Tisa” party in popularity, although a significant portion of voters have not yet made their choice.

Context of the Hungarian elections

Recall that recently, members of the European Parliament expressed serious concerns about the integrity of the elections in Hungary due to massive Russian interference and state pressure on the opposition. European lawmakers described the election campaign in the country as “dirty”.

It was also reported that Orbán’s government signed a secret “Moscow Protocol” with Russia. This 12-point plan provides for a significant expansion of economic and energy ties between the countries, contrary to the EU’s sanctions policy.

Furthermore, the main opponent of the current Prime Minister, Péter Madlár, assured that if the opposition wins, Hungary will change its course regarding the Kremlin. He promised to build pragmatic relations based on non-interference in the country’s internal affairs.
