Out of the ropes: how Wilder defeated Chisora in a crazy thriller with knockdowns (video)

The 50th anniversary bout in the careers of Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora turned into a real chaos

The boxing evening in London provided fans with one of the most brutal fights of the year in the heavyweight division. The 40-year-old American Deontay Wilder (45-4-1, 43 KOs) and the 42-year-old British fighter Derek Chisora (36-14, 23 KOs) engaged in an uncompromising battle, the outcome of which was decided only in the final minutes of the 12-round confrontation.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the fight’s results.

Chaos from the first minutes

The fight nearly ended in a scandalous disqualification in the opening round. After the boxers clinched in a fierce grapple, a member of Chisora’s team unexpectedly rushed into the ring, attempting to intervene in the “struggle.” The referee showed remarkable leniency towards the home fighter, limiting himself to just a warning.

The most dramatic moment occurred in the 8th round. Wilder caught Chisora with a powerful counter hook, after which the British veteran literally flew out of the ring ropes.

Despite the fall and his difficult condition, Derek managed to return and continue the fight. In the 11th round, Chisora found himself on the canvas again, but once more summoned the strength to rise, responding to the American with a punch after the bell.

Judges’ verdict and the “retirement” of a legend

Despite the fact that according to Compubox statistics, Chisora outperformed Wilder in terms of accurate punches (143 to 125), the two knockdowns proved decisive. The judges awarded Wilder the victory by split decision: 115-111, 115-113, and 112-115.

Immediately after the final bell, Derek Chisora confirmed the rumors about his retirement:

“To be completely honest, I’m tired. I can’t go on. Sometimes you just know it’s time. Well, the time has come. I had an amazing career,” the Briton stated.

Wilder returns to the game

This victory allowed the “Bronze Bomber” to revive his career after a series of setbacks. At the press conference, Deontay confirmed his readiness for major challenges, particularly against young star Moses Itauma.

Additionally, Wilder remains one of the top contenders for a fight with Oleksandr Usyk in the second half of 2026. The Ukrainian’s team had previously confirmed their interest in a bout with the American knockout artist, provided he passes the test against Chisora.
