WTA 500. Charleston. Round of 16
Yulia Starodubtseva (Ukraine) – Renata Sarazua (Mexico) – 6:1, 6:0
Total dominance in two sets
The match, which was anticipated as an equal battle between neighboring players in the world rankings, was completely controlled by Starodubtseva. Yulia seized the initiative from the start, effectively receiving and forcing her opponent to make constant errors.
The intrigue in the first set lasted until the score was 1:1. After that, Yulia won five consecutive games, allowing her to close the set with a crushing score of 6:1.
In the second set, the Ukrainian’s advantage was simply monumental. The Mexican “woke up” only in the sixth game when, trailing 0:5, she desperately wanted to avoid giving the decisive point to the Ukrainian. Sarazua managed to save two match points, but ultimately lost without winning a game – 0:6. The match lasted exactly one hour.
Ahead is a battle with the host
This was the first head-to-head meeting between the two players. Starodubtseva reached the WTA tournament quarterfinals for the first time since October 2024, when she made it to this stage at the “thousand” event in Beijing.
Yulia’s next opponent is the tournament host, 53rd-ranked Mackenzie Kessler.
Recall that in the first round of the tournament in Charleston, Starodubtseva defeated Chinese player Zhang Shuai (WTA 62), and in the second round, she overcame Georgian Ekaterine Gorgodze (WTA 164). Yulia remains the only representative of Ukraine in the tournament after the exits of Dayana Yastremska and Alexandra Oleynikova.
Earlier, we reported how Angelina Kalinina lost her title in Croatia after a streak of 14 consecutive victories.
