Shakhtar midfielder Izake Silva lost consciousness during the quarterfinal of the Conference League against AZ. Despite a heavy blow to the head and concerning symptoms, the Brazilian initially continued playing, which sparked a wave of criticism.

The start of the first match of the quarterfinals of the European Cup against AZ almost ended in tragedy for the Donetsk team.
In a game moment, Shakhtar’s midfielder Izake Silva received a powerful blow, after which he fell to the ground without signs of consciousness.
The medical staff managed to bring the player back to consciousness right on the field.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, Silva returned to the game, but just a few minutes later, the coaching staff was forced to make a substitution – Artem Bondarenko replaced the Brazilian on the field.
Doctor’s verdict: risky decision by the club
Renowned sports doctor Dmitry Babeleuk reacted strongly to the actions of Shakhtar’s staff.
According to him, the nature of the fall and the player’s “tonic posture” indicated a possible injury to the cervical spine and a concussion.
“At a time when protocols for concussions are being increasingly implemented worldwide and players are removed from the field after a blow to the head, our player is sent back onto the field after a tonic seizure,” the specialist emphasized, adding that Silva’s return to the field contradicts international medical safety standards.

Izake Silva is one of the key players in Shakhtar’s tactical setups. The match against AZ was his 27th of the current season.
The midfielder has scored 5 goals and provided 5 assists in all official tournaments.
