“He is not responding to anything”: Lucescu has been placed in an artificial coma, family urgently gathers in Bucharest.

The body of the outstanding coach has stopped coping, he has been connected to life support systems.

The legendary Romanian specialist, whose name has become synonymous with an entire football era in Ukraine, is in a state of medically induced coma. Following a severe heart attack and a complex operation, Mircea Lucescu’s condition has sharply deteriorated. While doctors are trying to stabilize his heart function, the coach’s closest people are urgently arriving at the hospital.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing exclusive details from Gazeta Sporturilor.

Terrible details from the intensive care unit

The technical director of the Romanian Football Federation, Mihai Stoichiță, was one of the few who managed to enter the intensive care unit. His account paints a picture of complete helplessness in the face of illness.

“He cannot speak. He is in an induced coma to help his body cope. I just looked at him… He is not reacting to anything. This is natural in such a state. He is fully connected to machines. God give him strength to survive, that is the only thing that matters right now,” an emotionally distressed Stoichiță said.

On the brink of endurance

The medical chronicle of recent days resembles a report from the front lines. On April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction right in the hospital. To bring the coach back to life, doctors had to perform resuscitation procedures three times right on the operating table. To restore the patency of the coronary arteries, specialists have already installed the fifth stent.

It seemed the crisis had passed, but on Sunday night, his heart rhythm became uncontrollable again. The arrhythmias became so severe that the patient was urgently transferred to the anesthesiology and intensive care unit.

Family gathers at the hospital

Next to Lucescu now are his wife Neli and granddaughter Marilu. His only son, Răzvan Lucescu, who currently heads the Greek PAOK, is expected to fly to Bucharest right after his club’s evening match against Panathinaikos.

“Sometimes the score on the scoreboard doesn’t matter, and the only victory we are fighting for is the victory of life. Fight, Mr. Lucescu!” the Romanian national team press service urged.
