What does the irregular participation of the U.S. Secretary of Defense in these meetings indicate?

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will not participate in the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Instead, the head of the Pentagon’s political division, Elbridge Colby, will attend.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Politico.

Two American officials stated that Hegseth’s irregular participation in the “Ramstein” meetings over the past year indicates a shift in the priorities of the U.S. administration.

According to the publication’s sources, Washington expects Europe to independently provide military support to Ukraine.

More than 50 defense ministers from Ukraine’s allied countries will participate in the meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 15. It will be coordinated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and British Defense Secretary John Healey, who took on this role after the U.S. stepped back from leadership in the group.

At the same time, the U.S. continues to provide Ukraine with intelligence data and fulfill previously approved arms deliveries; however, new military aid is not being approved.

Ramstein Meeting

Recall that the next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the “Ramstein” format is scheduled for April 15. The main topics of the meeting will be enhancing air defense and developing drone systems.

It should be noted that following the “Ramstein” meeting on February 12, Ukraine received one of the largest support packages. At that time, allies confirmed the allocation of $38 billion, which was directed towards the purchase of drones, air defense systems, and ammunition.

Additionally, besides receiving weapons, Kyiv is currently working on changing the operational logic of “Ramstein” itself. Reforming the format is necessary so that each participating country has a clear understanding of its specific contributions to Ukraine’s long-term defense capability.
