The US and Iran did not reach a deal, we are returning empty-handed, – Vance

What was the main reason the parties could not reach an agreement?

U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that the negotiations with Iran in Pakistan did not result in an agreement. In particular, Tehran is not yet ready to abandon its nuclear program.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing CNN.

During a press conference in Islamabad, Vance said that the U.S. has been engaged in negotiations for 22 hours and has had a number of substantive discussions. This is the good news. But there is also bad news.

“The bad news is that we did not reach an agreement. And I think this is worse news for Iran than for the U.S. So we are returning to the United States without reaching an agreement,” the official noted.

He added that the U.S. does not yet see Iran’s willingness to abandon the possibility of developing nuclear weapons, which is a sticking point in the negotiations.

“The question is whether we see a fundamental commitment from the Iranians not to develop nuclear weapons not only now, not only in two years, but also in the long term? We do not see that yet, but we hope to see it,” Vance said.

The Vice President emphasized that Iranian officials refused to accept the terms of the deal, which, according to him, were “sufficiently flexible”.

“We are leaving here with a very simple proposal, a way to achieve mutual understanding, which is our final and best option. Let’s see if the Iranians accept it,” he reported.

Vance also mentioned that U.S. President Donald Trump told the American delegation to come to the negotiations with good intentions and to make every effort to reach a deal. According to him, they did just that, but no progress was made.

Furthermore, the Vice President added that he was in constant communication with Trump during the trilateral negotiations with Iran in Pakistan, as well as keeping in touch with other officials in the administration.

“Obviously, we were in constant communication with the president. I don’t know how many times we spoke, six times, twelve in the last 21 hours,” he told reporters.

Additionally, before Vance’s conference, Iran’s Foreign Ministry representative Esmail Bakayi outlined the topics discussed in the Iranian-American negotiations.

According to him, the main topics included: the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear program, military reparations, lifting sanctions, and a complete cessation of war against Iran and in the region.

U.S.-Iran Negotiations

Recall that a day before the negotiations, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran had lost the war, and the key issue of the negotiations would be the absence of nuclear weapons in Tehran. According to the U.S. leader, such an outcome would be considered a successful deal.

After half of the negotiations had taken place, Trump stated that he did not care whether there would be a deal with Iran at all. He claims that in any outcome, they have won and continue to win.

We also reported that according to media sources, negotiations between the U.S. and Iran have reached a deadlock over the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz. In particular, Tehran wants to maintain control and opposes “joint” management.

The day before, Trump stated that the strait would be open regardless of whether there would be a deal with Iran or not. Shortly later on Saturday, he announced the process of unblocking the Strait of Hormuz.
