Can the American leader carry out threats to withdraw from the Alliance?
U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of withdrawing the U.S. from NATO. He will discuss this issue with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

A journalist asked Levitt whether the U.S. is still considering the possibility of withdrawing from the North Atlantic Alliance.
“This issue has been discussed by the president, and I believe he will discuss it with Secretary General Rutte in a couple of hours. Perhaps after this meeting, which will take place later today, you will hear comments directly from the president,” she replied.
Trump’s Threats
Recall that U.S. President Donald Trump began to sharply criticize NATO because allies refused to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz at his request to unblock its operation.
The American leader has repeatedly compared the Alliance to a “paper tiger” and accused allies of cowardice.
According to Trump, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not fear NATO if the U.S. withdraws from it.
He also warned that he is ready to consider the U.S. exit from the Alliance. In his opinion, the U.S. can handle all threats on its own.
In response to such threats, French President Emmanuel Macron advised his American counterpart to speak less. As Macron noted, Trump’s words cast doubt on U.S. commitments.
