How the funds will be used

According to the State Department’s announcement, the allocated funds will support:

  • the identification of deported children;
  • their return to Ukraine;
  • the rehabilitation of Ukrainian children and youth who were forcibly relocated by Russia.

U.S. funding will support two types of programs. The first is directly tracking deported children. The second is projects to support the Ukrainian government and trusted local partners in rehabilitation of those who have been successfully returned.

U.S. Position

The State Department noted that the U.S. continues to fund dozens of programs to assist civilians affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“President Trump has made it clear that the tragic bloodshed in Ukraine must end, and his administration remains fully committed to achieving lasting peace,” the statement said.

Recall that U.S. First Lady Melania Trump wrote a “letter of peace” to Vladimir Putin in August 2025, urging action regarding Ukrainian children taken by the Russian occupying administration. The letter was delivered to the Kremlin leader by Donald Trump ahead of the summit in Alaska.

In December 2025, the First Lady announced that as part of “humanitarian efforts,” seven abducted Ukrainian children were able to return home from Ukraine and Russia.

And on February 12, 2026, the White House stated that Melania Trump had again assisted in the return of abducted Ukrainian children to their families.
