Details of cooperation with Moscow

According to WP, citing an unnamed European security official, the Hungarian Foreign Minister called Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to promptly convey the content of discussions and potential EU decisions.

Due to such close communication, Russia effectively had a seat at the negotiating table at every EU meeting for many years.

Peter Szijjarto has not yet commented on this information.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry has made 16 official visits to Moscow.

The latest such trip took place on March 4, 2026, during which Szijjarto met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Scandals surrounding Hungary and Russia

It should be noted that several high-profile international scandals have recently erupted around the Hungarian authorities.

In particular, RBC-Ukraine reported that Russian intelligence planned to stage an assassination attempt on Viktor Orban. According to journalists, this provocation aimed to alter the course of elections in the country.

Additionally, it was previously revealed that Hungarian security forces mistreated detained Ukrainians. Media reported that “Oschadbank” employees were subjected to injections of “truth serum” to force them into confessions.

In this regard, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has already demanded an investigation into the use of KGB methods against Ukrainian cash transporters.
