Digital Money from the NBU: What is e-hryvnia and how will it work

As noted on the NBU website, Ukraine is exploring the possibility of implementing e-hryvnia – an electronic form of the national currency, issued by the National Bank. According to the law “On Payment Services,” it will complement traditional cash and cashless means.

What is important to know about e-hryvnia?

This is a legal means of payment that will exist exclusively in cashless form. It is intended to be a convenient tool for everyone: citizens, businesses, and government bodies. The main feature is the ability to program payments while ensuring user privacy.

How can digital money be used?

It is expected that e-hryvnia will allow for all types of operations:

  • transfers between individuals (from wallet to wallet);
  • payment for goods and services;
  • payments to the government and charitable donations;
  • receiving salaries, social benefits, and other incomes.

Can e-hryvnia be obtained now?

As of today, a final decision on the implementation of e-hryvnia has not yet been made. The NBU is currently preparing for a pilot project, where the digital currency will be tested using DLT technology. This will help assess how well the technology meets user needs.

Only after the completion of the “pilot” and an assessment of its impact on the financial stability of the state will the National Bank decide whether it is advisable to issue e-hryvnia for widespread circulation.
