Unacceptable Behavior: Orbán Criticized Harshly During European Council Meeting

Orban was hinted that he crossed the European “red line”

The behavior of pro-Russian Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in blocking loans for Ukraine is unacceptable. Orban has crossed the “red line” for a member of the European Union.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Politico.

President of the European Council Antonio Costa criticized Orban during the discussion in the hall regarding the loan for Ukraine amounting to 90 billion euros. He stated that Orban’s behavior is “unacceptable.”

Costa added that no EU leader has previously crossed this “red line.” This should not be influenced even by Hungary’s belief that the situation has changed—since the “changes” are related to Russian attacks. Costa’s opinion was supported by another 20 EU leaders.

“A leader’s decision cannot depend on the actions of a third country. Costa added that Budapest has access to alternative oil supply routes,” the publication writes.

Orban attempted to justify himself, claiming that he has the right to block the decision. Another pro-Russian figure, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, also defended him, stating that Slovakia joins Hungary in blocking the Rada’s decision on Ukraine.

Earlier, the publication noted that Orban blocked the loan for Ukraine amounting to 90 billion euros, which he himself approved in December, thus crossing a line beyond which the EU will no longer remain silent. For example, Germany expressed outrage, while Sweden has already openly stated its readiness to consider Article 7 of the EU Treaty—a mechanism for depriving Hungary of its voting rights.

It should be noted that the summit indicated that the European Union could begin transferring funds to Ukraine under the 90 billion euro loan as early as the beginning of April. The process is still being blocked by Hungary.

Orban himself dared to state during the summit that Hungary would not support any decision in favor of Ukraine until the “Druzhba” pipeline is operational. All evidence that the oil pipeline has been incapacitated by Russian strikes, in the opinion of his friend, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, is “just a fairy tale.”
