Details of the MEPs’ appeal

As the publication notes, five high-ranking members of the European Parliament expressed “serious doubts” regarding the possibility of conducting free and fair voting, which is set to take place this coming Sunday.

They urged the European Commission to publicly assess how disinformation, the use of state resources, and foreign interference undermine democratic competition in the country.

“The conditions for free and fair democratic competition in Hungary are undermined by disinformation and foreign interference,” the authors of the letter state.

Russian involvement and pressure on the media

Lawmakers pay special attention to the covert support of the ruling party “Fidesz’s” election campaign by the Russian military intelligence.

They also mention instances of creating a network of fake media that spread false information about opposition leader Peter Marki-Zay.

As a separate point, the deputies highlighted the persecution of investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi, who was charged with espionage by Hungarian authorities following his publications about connections with Moscow.

“The Hungarian government has brought criminal charges against him for alleged espionage, accompanied by a public campaign portraying him as a threat to the nation,” the appeal states.

Scandals surrounding Orban and ties with Russia

It is worth recalling that it was previously revealed that Hungary and Russia had concluded a secret 12-point plan that provides for a significant expansion of economic and energy ties with Moscow. The opposition has already dubbed this document the “Moscow Protocol.”

Additionally, a scandal recently erupted over a leaked conversation between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Orban was forced to justify his sycophancy towards the dictator, stating that he is “ready to be Putin’s mouse” for the interests of the country.

Moreover, the media has reported sensational testimonies about the past of the Hungarian government head. A former representative of Budapest’s criminal underworld spoke about Orban’s “dark dealings” in the 1990s, claiming that gangsters financed his early political campaigns.
