Automatic gas meter reading: who will receive the new devices and how it will work

Smart modules to be installed in three regions of Ukraine

In Ukraine, 40,000 smart modules for gas meters will be installed, allowing data to be transmitted remotely without consumer involvement.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation of Ukraine.

Main points:

  • Automation: 40,000 smart modules will be installed in Ukraine for remote transmission of gas readings without consumer participation.
  • Geography: The equipment will be received by three branches of “Gas Networks”: Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Volyn.
  • Free of charge: The modules will be installed for households and budget institutions at no cost.
  • Advantages: The system helps avoid billing errors, automatically transmits data, and allows online consumption tracking.
  • Modernization: Smart modules are installed on old meters, enabling the upgrade of the accounting system without complete replacement of devices.

What will change

These are smart modules produced in Ukraine that will be installed on standard gas meters. They enhance the functionality of the devices through wireless data transmission and integration with digital systems.

The equipment has been provided to LLC “Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine” at no cost from the State Fund for Decarbonization and Energy Efficiency Transformation.

Where the modules will be installed

Smart modules will be received by households and budget institutions. They will be distributed to three regional branches:

  • Kyiv – 23,965 devices,
  • Mykolaiv – 12,655,
  • Volyn – 3,380.

After that, the branches will ensure a phased installation of the equipment.

What are the benefits for consumers

The introduction of smart modules will allow:

  • to transmit gas readings automatically;
  • to track consumption through digital services;
  • to quickly identify atypical changes;
  • to generate billing based on actual data;
  • to control expenses thanks to detailed information.

Why is this necessary

The implementation of such technologies is part of the transition to smart energy resource accounting and compliance with European energy efficiency requirements. In particular, Ukraine must report on progress in implementing the relevant directive by 2027.

Moreover, the use of smart modules allows for modernizing the accounting system without fully replacing meters, making the process faster and less costly.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that gas meters in Ukraine need to be regularly checked, as their accuracy affects billing. The frequency of checks depends on the type of meter, and all work related to inspection and maintenance is covered by the gas distribution network operator.

We also wrote about why Ukrainians may not receive paper gas bills. Naftogaz explained that this could be due to overpayment, prior payments, or the transition to electronic bills, which arrive faster and are available online.
