How many hours communication works without electricity: the Ministry of Digital Development has provided the exact figures.

How long can mobile networks last without power?

Mobile communication in Ukraine during a blackout can operate for several hours to several days, depending on the duration of the power outage.

This was stated in an interview with RBK-Ukraine by Stanislav Pribytko, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation for the Development of Digital Infrastructure.

He explained that in the event of a complete blackout, the network’s operational algorithm depends on the duration of the power outage.

“We are not deluding ourselves but relying on clear calculations of network resilience. If the outage lasts 10-12 hours, the communication operation algorithm will be as follows,” Pribytko said.

According to him, for the first 4-6 hours, subscribers may not even notice interruptions, as 100% of base stations in Ukraine are equipped with batteries.

Moreover, 92% of stations can operate for 6 to 8 hours without power supply thanks to enhanced batteries.

“But 10, 12 hours or more is a scenario where batteries are no longer sufficient, and generators kick in. Currently, almost half of all base stations in the country are equipped with them,” he explained.

Pribytko noted that these generators can maintain communication for over 3 days (72+ hours). The main challenge during such prolonged blackouts is to turn them on and refuel them in a timely manner.

He added that the Ministry of Digital Transformation has provided communities with the ability to independently power base stations in case of a shortage of mobile operator personnel.

“Therefore, the resilience of communication at the 10th or 12th hour of the outage is the result of the joint efforts of operators, local authorities, and your personal preparation if you have previously set up energy-independent internet xPON at home,” the deputy minister concluded.

Communication in Ukraine during a blackout

As is known, power outages affect the operation of mobile networks and home internet. However, today communication in Ukraine during blackouts is significantly more stable than in 2022.

If back then, after the power went out, mobile towers could shut down within one to two hours, the situation has significantly improved now.

Currently, networks can operate much longer, and even during prolonged outages, communication is maintained in most cases.

This has become possible due to the transition of base stations to backup power – after the power goes out, they automatically switch to batteries or generators.

Despite the challenging situation in the energy system, mobile communication continues to function in all regions of Ukraine.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation has also provided recommendations on how to maintain home internet during power outages.
