This area has remained vacant since the demolition of the Lenin monument in 2013.

At the intersection of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk, plans are underway to create a modern public space. The main goal of the project is to establish a barrier-free environment and “stitch” together pedestrian routes in the city center.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a message from the Deputy Chairman of the Kyiv City State Administration Valentyn Mondriyevskyi on Facebook.

Main points:

  • Convenient above-ground crossings will be established to eliminate the barrier of the underground passage.
  • As part of the project, the surface will be updated, greening will be conducted, and lighting will be installed.
  • A fountain will be a separate element, which will be built with the support of patrons.
  • The location will feature resting areas, making it safe for people with limited mobility.

Urban space renewal

Since 2013, after the dismantling of the Lenin monument, this area has remained a transit zone without full pedestrian functionality. Crossing the road here can only be done via an underground passage, which poses difficulties for parents with strollers, wheelchair users, and elderly people.

“This decision is not about today’s effect – but about what the city will look like in years to come. As a result, we should obtain a modern public space that meets people’s needs,” the initiative’s authors note.

The updated area is expected to logically complete the pedestrian section in the historic center. According to the visualization, the centerpiece of the recreation area will be a fountain, 4-5 stories high. It will be installed with funds from benefactors, particularly the company Farmak.

Kyiv residents’ reaction to the project

Mondriyevskyi’s post is actively commented on by Kyiv residents. Their opinions on the project are divided. Some consider such an update appropriate and emphasize that the space will look significantly better than it does now.

At the same time, some criticize the project for the installation of the fountain, arguing that there are already many fountains in the city that are not activated during the season. Additionally, they suggest replacing it with a pedestal for one of the well-known historical figures, such as Pavlo Skoropadskyi, Symon Petliura, or Alexander and Mykola Tereshchenko.
