Germany’s Chancellor also explained his pre-election calls to provide weapons to Kyiv
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he no longer sees the point in transferring Taurus missiles to Ukraine, as he believes Ukrainian weapons are more effective.

The German Chancellor said that he currently does not see the sense in transferring Taurus missiles to the Ukrainian army, as Ukraine itself produces long-range weaponry.
According to Merz, Ukrainian long-range weapons are “significantly more effective than the relatively small number of Taurus cruise missiles that Germany could transfer.”
Moreover, the Chancellor of Germany explained his pre-election calls for providing Ukraine with long-range missiles. He noted that at that time he assumed the Bundeswehr had a sufficient number of operational Taurus missiles that could be transferred to Kyiv.
Taurus missiles for Ukraine
Recall that during his time in opposition, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz repeatedly expressed his intention to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine for strikes on Russian territory.
After he came to power, Merz did not change his stance. In particular, in July of last year, the head of the German government did not rule out the transfer of this weaponry to Ukraine.
At the same time, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated during a visit to Kyiv last year that Berlin is not considering transferring these missiles to Ukraine.
It is worth noting that in the German parliament at the end of last year, Merz was urged to transfer long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. It was emphasized that the Chancellor should adhere to what he rightly demanded while in opposition.
