The design of the egg-shaped coin is impressive, but the circulation is limited

On the eve of Easter, the National Bank introduced a new unique commemorative coin. It is shaped like a pysanka and is dedicated to Ukrainian painting, featuring sacred symbols of Polissia.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the NBU press service on Facebook.

Main points:

  • Unique shape: the silver coin (999 purity) is made in the shape of a pysanka with enamel finishing.
  • Symbolism: the design reproduces ancient ornaments of Polissia (Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Rivne, and Volyn regions).
  • Exclusivity: the circulation is limited, so only one coin is sold “per person”.
  • Price: the official price of the new coin from the NBU is 8,832 hryvnias.

What makes the new commemorative coin special

The NBU reminded that they started the Easter tradition last year – releasing coins in the shape of a pysanka.

It is reported that a new commemorative coin “Easter Joy. Pysanka” is being introduced for the Easter holidays, continuing the series “Ukrainian Heritage”.

It is specified that the coin is dedicated to Ukrainian painting.

“This decorative art embodies the centuries-old culture and artistic mastery of Ukrainians, and in 2024 it was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO,” the NBU explained.

It is also noted that this year pays tribute to the traditions of one of the oldest ethnographic regions of Ukraine – Polissia.

“It is the Polissian ornaments that the new commemorative coin reflects,” the NBU explained to Ukrainians.

What the pysanka coin is made of

According to NBU information, the commemorative coin “Easter Joy. Pysanka” is made of 999 silver.

“The mass of the precious metal in pure form is 31.1 g,” they informed citizens.

It is decorated with:

  • enamel;
  • patination.

The nominal value of the pysanka-shaped commemorative coin is 10 hryvnias.

What the ornament and colors symbolize

The obverse of the new coin is divided into four sectors by lines that form a cross – a sacred sign symbolizing the unity of existence (connecting heaven and earth).

Each sector represents the pysankarstvo of Polissia and contains ornaments characteristic of this region:

  • Rivne region – waves, grid, and rakes;
  • Volyn – a fragment of a star, dots, rakes, sun, and waves;
  • Zhytomyr region – rakes and sun;
  • Kyiv region – spirals and grid.

Ukrainians were told that each of these ornament elements has deep symbolic meaning:

  • sun and star – embodiment of light, life-giving energy, development, and prosperity;
  • waves symbolize water, longevity, and fertility;
  • spirals – a sign of infinity, protection from evil spirits, and the eternal flow of life;
  • grid – a connection between worlds;
  • rakes – an archaic symbol of rain;
  • dots – seeds, representing the birth of new life and continuation of the lineage.

On the reverse of the commemorative coin, a pysanka with traditional ornamentation of Chernihiv region (Polissia) – ruža (dawn) – is reproduced.

It symbolizes the sun, fire, and light, embodying life, prosperity, energy, and the spring awakening of nature.

Additionally, the symbolism of the reverse motif is complemented by colors:

  • red – a symbol of strength, health, and energy (traditionally considered a powerful amulet);
  • black – a symbol of earth, fertility, ancestral memory, and protection.

“The design is by Oleksandra Kuchynska,” the NBU clarified.

Where to buy the pysanka coin and its price

The circulation of the new coin (according to NBU information) is up to 15,000 pieces.

It can be purchased in the NBU’s online numismatic product store (starting April 7, 2026).

“The coin will also be sold by distributing banks,” the National Bank clarified.
