Why military personnel should not expect a mass transition to summer clothing this year?

Ukrainian defenders should not expect a quick mass transition to summer uniforms. This year’s spring has been quite cold, and therefore the decision depends not on the date but on weather conditions.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a statement from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

Main points:

  • Condition for transition: Stable temperature of +15°C for several days.
  • Regional features: Southern garrisons change uniforms faster than northern ones due to climate differences.
  • Advice for soldiers: The Ministry of Defense recommends checking size accuracy with the supply officer now to avoid delays in receiving equipment.
  • Materials: The uniform has reinforced areas at the elbows and knees, and T-shirts are made from quick-drying fabrics.

When to expect a change of uniform

The ministry notes that there is no specific date for the mass transition to summer clothing. The main criterion is temperature conditions.

The command gives the corresponding permission only when the average air temperature consistently remains at +15°C and above for several days. Due to weather peculiarities, the process occurs unevenly: in southern Ukraine, the transition usually begins earlier than in northern regions.

Direct decisions about changing uniforms are made by garrison commanders or branch commanders, guided by the order of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine No. 606 dated 20.11.2017.

What is included in the summer kit

Summer uniforms are made from lightweight fabrics that provide ventilation and moisture wicking. The standard field kit includes:

  • headgear – field cap (kepi) or summer hat;
  • clothing – summer field suit, polo shirt, combat shirt, and short-sleeve jacket;
  • footwear and accessories – summer boots (or half-boots), trekking socks, and a trouser belt;
  • protection – summer neck gaiter and windproof/waterproof suit (in case of rain or wind).

Military personnel are also allowed to wear individual elements of the transitional uniform over the main uniform during strong winds.

It is worth noting that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will gradually phase out the MM-14 (“pixel”) uniform and transition to the new MM-25 camouflage, which, according to media reports, is based on Multicam. The timeline for the full transition has not yet been determined, and the process may take several years.

RBC-Ukraine also reported that Ukraine has approved the composition of the mandatory first aid kit (AMZI) according to NATO tactical medicine standards. It includes items for stopping bleeding, treating wounds, medications, and auxiliary tools, as well as a special casualty card for documenting assistance on the battlefield.
