Almost everyone breaks the rules: where cyclists should actually ride and what rules are often forgotten.

How to Move Correctly When There Is No Bike Path: Essential Knowledge for Everyone

Key rules for safe movement for owners of two-wheeled vehicles are straightforward. However, one must not forget about the requirements for bicycle equipment and the specifics of maneuvering on city roads for both children and adults.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a publication from the press service of the Patrol Police of Kyiv on Facebook.

Where Cyclists Should Ride

“Do you love riding a bicycle? Here are some useful tips to ensure your trips are safe,” the law enforcement officers wrote.

Ukrainians were reminded that when available, one must always move:

  • either on bike paths;
  • or on bike lanes.

If such paths are not nearby, cyclists may move:

  • on the far right lane of the roadway;
  • only in a single file.

It is emphasized that only individuals aged 14 and older may ride a bicycle on the roadway.

What Must Be on a Bicycle

The Patrol Police stated that while riding, a bicycle must have:

  • functional brakes;
  • a horn;
  • reflective elements.

It is also important to remember the color of these elements:

  • they must be white in front;
  • orange on the sides;
  • red at the back.

Additionally, the bicycle must be equipped with a working light (headlight):

  • at night;
  • in conditions of poor visibility.

How to Cross the Road Correctly

If a bike path crosses a road outside of an intersection, cyclists are required to yield to other vehicles – those moving on the road.

Furthermore, cyclists must cross the roadway:

  • if available – at a bike crossing;
  • if not available – in accordance with traffic rules.

“In places where traffic is regulated, cyclists must follow the signals of the traffic controller or traffic light,” the law enforcement officers added.

What Can Be Transported While Riding a Bicycle

Ukrainians were informed that, in general (according to the rules), while riding a bicycle, one can only transport loads that:

  • do not interfere with control;
  • do not create obstacles for other road users.

“Be responsible and safe travels,” the police press service concluded.
