Statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of the country leaving NATO have provoked a rare split within his “home” Republican Party.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

This has happened almost for the first time in many years and certainly for the first time during Trump’s presidency.<\/p>\n In particular, Senators Thom Tillis (Republican) and Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat) in a joint statement reminded that NATO allies were the only ones who came to the aid of the U.S. after the September 11 attacks.<\/p>\n “NATO supported America when we were attacked and came to our aid after the September 11 attacks. Their soldiers fought and died alongside our troops in Afghanistan,” the statement said.<\/p>\n Moreover, the senators stated that any discussions about leaving NATO are equivalent to surrendering U.S. national interests.<\/p>\n “Any president who considers the possibility of leaving NATO is not only fulfilling the greatest dreams of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping but also undermining America’s own national security interests,” Tillis and Shaheen noted.<\/p>\n Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, along with Democrat Chris Coons, urged not to overlook the sacrifices of allies. McConnell emphasized that Americans are safe only when NATO is strong and united.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n “Disputes within the alliance are as old as the alliance itself. Americans are safe when NATO is strong and united. It is in our interest for all allies to carefully support this unity,” the senators said.<\/p>\n Interestingly, the loudest critics of Trump among Republicans are now concluding their political careers. Thom Tillis is not running for re-election, and veteran politician Mitch McConnell is retiring after more than 40 years of service.<\/p>\n This allows them to openly oppose the president without fearing for their standing within the party. Moreover, Trump, according to a law passed by Congress in 2024, cannot unilaterally decide to withdraw from NATO. This requires at least two-thirds of the votes in the Senate or a special decision from Congress.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Trump and his NATO outbursts<\/p>\n Recall that after European countries refused to support the war in Iran, Trump began to seriously lash out.
